Turbochargers, turbochargers and more turbochargers One of the limitations of a turbocharger is the size of the exhaust inlet of the turbine housing. When a small inlet is used, the turbo will work perfectly at lower engine speeds. This causes the risk of overspeeding at higher engine speeds, that can lead to huge turbocharger damage. When a larger exhaust inlet is used, the problem is reversed. The turbocharger will function perfectly at higher engine speeds, but there will be a lack of turbo pressure at lower speeds. | To solve this dilemma manufacturers invented variable geometry. With this technique one can adjust the size of the exhaust inlet in order to cover a wider range of engine speeds and torque. In order to reach a smaller exhaust inlet at lower engine speeds, manufacturers use a variable ring with several blades that can open and close. By adjusting these blades we can alter the angle in which the exhaust gasses are blown onto the turbine wheel. When the blades are almost completely closed, the gasses will be aimed towards the end of the blades. The turbo accelerates quicker and will reach the expected turbo pressure in a much earlier phase than before, as if it were a turbo with a small exhaust inlet. The blades will be opened as soon as the turbocharger reaches the expected pressure, in order to slow the turbine wheel down. This continues until the blades are fully opened, which means that it is like a turbo with no variable mechanism at all. This means that the maximum speed of the turbo is then set by the actual exhaust inlet of the turbine housing. The turbocharger is a specialised product on which we have focussed ourselves entirely. How? With a team of turbo fanatics that are willing to supply competently repaired turbochargers. We are able to supply both new and professionally remanufactured turbochargers. By maintaining our international contacts we are able to offer our product range at a very competitive price. The picture below shows you the three main parts of a turbocharger. First you see the aluminium part, known as the compressor housing. Next is the core assembly of the turbocharger and the last main part of the turbocharger is the turbine housing. The turbine housing is made out of cast iron and is therefore capable of withstanding the enormous temperatures that the engine is creating. These temperatures can rise to over 800° C. The turbine wheel of the turbocharger is driven by exhaust gasses. Because of the shape of the turbine housing these gasses are blown against the blades of the turbine wheel at high speeds. This causes the wheel to spin. The bearing housing forms the central part of the turbocharger and is mounted between the compressor housing and the turbine housing. The rotor assembly (consisting of the turbine wheel and compressor wheel) runs through this bearing housing. Lubrication of the shaft and the bearings occurs via the oil circuit of the engine. The oil enters the turbocharger under pressure and also works as a cooling element, besides acting as a lubricant. When exhaust gasses exceed temperatures of 850 °C, the manufacturers use water-cooled bearing housings. The turbine wheel is attached to the wheel on the compressor side of the turbo, the compressor wheel, via a steel shaft. The position of the blades of the compressor wheel is opposite to that of the blades of the turbine wheel. This ensures that the airflow is coming towards the turbocharger from the air filter. The shape of the compressor housing makes sure that the airflow is compressed, after which it is led to the combustion chamber under pressure.
